On this day 17 years ago 2,977 people lost their lives. This included 343 fire fighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and 8 EMTs and paramedics. Please take time out of your day and think about those individuals and their families who perished on that day.

This came into our inbox today: Thank you so much to the city of Winterset and Madison County for helping us today. Our family was out exploring, as our boys call it, and our 9 week old son Harry got accidentally locked in the car at the Hogback bridge. Keys were left in and one of the big boys accidentally hit the lock before Mom could open the door to get out baby brother. We had cell service and the officers responded quickly. The whole thing was over than less than 10 minutes, but was terrifying for us. Clouds and efficient and responsive officers saved the day. We can’t thank you enough. Feel free to share on your FB page. Matt, Maureen, Jude, Hugh, and Harry Kajewski. Kudos to Winterset Police Officer Brandon Douglas and Deputy Chad Hollerud!

Happy Fourth of July from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office!

Americans love to celebrate the 4th of July with family, friends, food, and fireworks. But all too often the festivities turn tragic on the nation's roads. This iconic American holiday is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to drunk-driving crashes. Over the 2016 Fourth of July holiday (6 p.m. July 2 to 5:59 a.m. July 6), 188 people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. This is a 28% increase from 2015 (146 fatalities). Nearly half of those who died were in a vehicle crash involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC of .15 or higher - almost twice the legal limit. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in heightened patrol during this holiday. Please, if you drink don’t drive.

**UPDATE** The tornado warning has been allow to expire but Madison County remains in a tornado watch until 9 pm. The National Weather Service has placed central Madison County, including Winterset, under a tornado warning. Please take cover at this time.
