Hoffman Estates Police Department News

Halloween is just a few weeks away! Here are a few tips for you to share

Great job HEPD and THANK YOU too all of our sponsors!!

Several area departments have reported scams called "Ruse" Burglaries. A ruse scam happens when someone comes to the door and claims they need to check for a gas leak, make sure your cable service is working correctly, flush all the toilets due to work on a water main down the block, or any other similar excuse. These scammers often work in pairs, so one person can keep you occupied with pleasantries or a clipboard full of questions while the other person steals money, jewelry, or other items. How Can You Avoid It: • Never let anyone in your home without prior notification and identification. Never open your door to anyone you do not know. Do not give them an opportunity to push the door in. • If anyone claims to need access to your property, tell them to wait right there while you call the company they work for. • Do not use a phone number they provide, as it could be part of their ruse. • Always look out a window to see who is at your door. Make sure the person sees you. This lets them know that someone is actually home. • Do not be fooled by "phony" uniforms, work vests, or ID badges. If you did not call or request the service, do not open the door. • If the scammer refuses to leave and/or continues to pressure you into letting them in, please call "911" immediately. PLEASE share this information with your neighbors, especially the elderly who live alone. Burglars are predators who like to seek out homes they believe are easy targets. You can contact our crime prevention unit at 847-781-2880 for more information.

Starting today the village will begin testing of sanitary sewer lines. The areas that testing will occur had letters mailed to their homes. Please follow the instructions on the letter if you have any questions about the tests.

We remember.

With more storms expected, you can help keep your streets from flooding. Check the curbs areas for excess leaves or items that will block the water flow. Check your gutters, make sure they are also clear to assist with draining. Always remember that driving through deep water is dangerous and bad for your car. Use caution if you need to pass through water on the roadway!
