We have noticed another increase in fraud incident where the caller is demanding you purchase gift cards to pay a past due bill – for such businesses like the IRS, Com Ed, ComCast, etc. PLEASE DO NOT FALL VICTIM TO THESE REQUESTS. If a business is requesting this type of payment – IT IS A SCAM! These calls are threatening, and they even are spoofing a business to make you think you are dealing with a legitimate company. ("Spoofing" occurs when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity). A legitimate company will NOT request payment by purchasing gift cards and giving them the security code, nor will they threaten to arrest you. Never give out personal information such as account numbers, Social Security numbers, mother's maiden names, passwords or other identifying information in response to unexpected calls or if you are at all suspicious. If you receive these calls, you may contact us or file a complaint with the FCC.

National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. This year, the names of 360 officers killed in the line of duty are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 360 officers include 129 officers who were killed during 2017, plus 231 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now. In tribute to American law enforcement officers, May 15th is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half staff. The DeKalb Police Department salutes the service of all law enforcement officers across the nation and we remember the fallen.

The DeKalb Police Department has received reports of a telephone scam regarding automobile warranties. A subject will receive a telephone call from a robo-call system directing the person to press a button to talk to a real person. That person then solicits money under the guise of renewing a warranty. The company is identifying themselves as “Warranty Services” and appears to be fraudulent. All citizens should exercise caution before releasing any personal or financial information over the telephone. Anyone with information regarding this incident or who observe any suspicious activity are encouraged to report it to the DeKalb Police Department at 815-748-8400 or dial 911 in the event of an emergency.
