It is with a sad heart we announce the passing of Ronald Newton. AKA "Newt" he was an auxiliary police officer and could be counted on for every ball game and town event. Newt served in the fire service for at least 30 years. He dedicated his life in the service of others. Greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends. Rest easy Brother we've got it from here. Services to honor Newt will be November 3, noon to 2 p.m. at Union Funeral Home.

The 2nd Annual Gold Star 500 came through Zeigler this morning. The 500 mile bike ride is to raise awareness and preserve the legacy of each Illinois Fallen Service Member. The ride is supported by the IL Dept of Veteran's Affairs, the US Army, and Gold Star Mission. It was our privilege to assist with traffic control for the caravan and provide a rest stop at Super Kohl Park. Please honor and remember those who made made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

The Zeigler Police Department prides itself on being more than a law enforcement agency. We occasionally have lost items brought to the PD, and as community caretakers, we do our best to ensure that property is returned to its rightful owner. Unfortunately, sometimes we just can’t figure out who the owner is. And that brings us to the subject of this post: The following items were found under some debris on the 200 block of N Pine St today. If you are the owner of the pictured items (or know the owner), please call Central Dispatch at 724-2424 and ask to have one of our courteous and friendly Officers meet you at the PD to claim your property. We will gladly oblige.

Today, the Zeigler Fire Department held their annual car show. A record 105 vehicles competed for awards. One of the contestants was Mr. Tom Tessone of Johnston City. He entered a restored 1969 Chevrolet Bel Air Illinois State Police cruiser. The Bel Air was awarded second place in its category. After the competition, Mr. Tessone was gracious enough to stage a photo on the Circle with the Chief's car, a 2011 Chevrolet Caprice PPV. Talk about history!

On the afternoon of July 5th, ZPD was made aware of an elderly gentleman in town whose wall unit air conditioner was no longer working. Due to recent extreme heat index readings, age, and health concerns, this posed an immediate and ongoing danger to the man. One of the Department's officers donated an unused wall unit air conditioner he had. The officer and Department are very pleased that we were able to assist a resident in need.

Attention all Zeigler water customers, the boil order has been lifted.

Zeigler Water Customers: Water samples were drawn and submited for testing at around 8:00am this morning. We should have results from Carbondale Lab around 2:00pm on Monday. Any question about Lead and Copper call 1-800-424-5323. The burn ban is lifted, but the boil order still in effect until the lab results are in.

Water update this morning, water has been restored but boil water still in effect until at least Monday. Also remove your screens from your water faucets so sediments can pass through and not clog the faucet. If there are any questions about lead or copper please call 1-800-424-5323.

The latest update on the water situation in Zeigler. Per the Mayor our water tower holds 21 feet of water at max capacity, we are currently at 14 feet of water. Partial water restoration will be in place by morning. Thank you to this community for banding together and keeping our water usage low. We still need to conserve water until full restoration of service from Rend Lake, no washing cars, lawns or gardens and burn ban is still in effect but regular water consumption should not affect our water supply.

A quick update on the water situation. If we continue to conserve water we will have water through tomorrow. The mayor's had a conference call at 3:30 with Rend Lake Water, and repairs are ongoing to try to get partial water supply up and running. There will be another conference call with the Mayor's at 8 p.m. and we will post any updates and time frames for possible restoration of water services then. Thank you everyone for helping conserve water, and remember to take care of each other and we will get through this.

Rend Lake Water Conservancy is still working on a 36 inch water main break. Water supply is limited to what we have in the tower, so please conserve your water and also note we are under a boil order and a burn ban until further notice. Please no washing cars, yards or gardens until this issue is resolved.

The city of Zeigler has provided this dumpster behind the PD, we encourage people to use it. We have had four loads hauled off this year, we are preparing for the city wide clean up now, so please feel free to use this asset during spring cleaning.
