This escort is completed and Rt. 48 should be clear. Starting shortly after 5pm tonight, our office & the Argenta-Oreana Fire Department will be escorting the Argenta-Oreana CUSD #1 High School football team home after their victory in Moweaqua. The escort will start at the Pilot Truck Stop on Rt. 48 and travel north on Rt. 48 to the high school in Argenta. Please use caution and expect minor delays if you plan on traveling Rt. 48 this evening during the escort. UPDATE 11/8/18: The suspect vehicle & suspect have been located in this case. Thank you to everyone for your assistance in solving this case. The Macon County Sheriff’s Department needs your help in solving this week’s crime of the week. On 10/30/18, at approximately 6:48 p.m., Macon County Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of US Route 36 and Shaw Rd., near Casner, IL, in reference to a vehicle vs. bicyclist accident. Upon arrival, the bicyclist was transported to a local hospital for serious injuries. The suspect vehicle left the scene prior to EMS or Deputies arrival. An eyewitness on scene described the suspect vehicle as a smaller red car. The witness stated the bicyclist was riding westbound on the north side of Route 36 when the bicyclist was struck from behind, by the suspect vehicle. The witness advised, the suspect vehicle continued westbound on Route 36 toward Decatur. Deputies located a red piece of the suspect vehicle’s front bumper. It was determined that the piece of bumper belongs to a red Chevy Impala. The suspect vehicle should have damage to the front passenger bumper/wheel well. The Macon County Sheriff’s Office needs your help in solving this crime. If you have any information regarding this crime, please call Crime Stoppers at 423-TIPS. You do not have to give your name. Crime Stoppers will pay $500 dollars or more for information that leads to an arrest on the crime of the week. Thank you.

Update: The roadway is now clear and open. US Route 36 (both lanes) is currently shut down at Casner as we are investigating an accident at this location.

Fatal Car Crash On 10/29/18 at 6:11 p.m. deputies responded to Greenswitch Road near the intersection of Hickory Point Road in reference to a single vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation indicated that one vehicle had been involved in the crash. The driver, a 38 year Oreana man, was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. There were no other occupants in the vehicle and the cause of the crash is under investigation by the Fatal Accident Investigation Team.

Strong winds are taking down trees, poles and lines throughout Macon County. Please slow down and be on the lookout for these and other items blown onto the road by this intense wind.

If you see a disabled vehicle on the side of a highway you need to #moveover The sheriff's office will be conducting extra enforcement of this law today. (625 ILCS 5/11-907.5) Sec. 11-907.5. Approaching disabled vehicles. (a) Upon approaching a disabled vehicle with lighted hazard lights on a highway having at least 4 lanes, of which at least 2 are proceeding in the same direction, a driver of a vehicle shall: (1) proceeding with due caution, make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to that disabled vehicle, if possible with due regard to safety and traffic conditions; or (2) proceeding with due caution, reduce the speed of the vehicle, maintaining a safe speed for road conditions, if changing lanes would be impossible or unsafe.
