Western Illinois University - Office of Public Safety News

#WIU The last of the six branches of service OPS would like to recognize is the youngest of the military branches, the U.S. Air Force. Between 1909 and 1947 the U.S. Air Force did not exist as a separate and independent military service organization until it was officially founded on September 18, 1947.

#WIU The Office of Public Safety (OPS) would like to thank all veterans and families for their service to our Country. Here is a partial list of OPS members who have served. Adam - U.S. Navy 2007 - 2011 Guy - U.S. Army 1990 - 1996 Lance - U.S. Marine Corps Reserve &Illinois National Guard 1991 - 1999 Scott - U.S. Marine Corps 1976 - 1980 THANK YOU all Vets!

#WIU OPS would like to say Happy Birthday to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). The Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775 by the Second Continental Congress. The birthplace of the Corps is unique in that the first marines to enlist did so at Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania. For all you Marine Leathernecks & WIU Leathernecks everywhere, Happy Birthday and Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful!).

#WIU Today, OPS recognizes the U.S. Coast Guard’s birth date of August 4th. The U.S. Coastguard was founded on “Aug. 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of federal revenue.”

#WIU Today, OPS recognizes the U.S. Navy’s birth date of October 13. Last month the U.S. Navy celebrated their 243rd birthday since their establishment by the Continental Congress on October 13, 1775 with the hopes that a small fleet of privateers could attack British commerce and offset British sea power in the early days of the American Revolution.

#WIU Today, OPS recognizes the U.S. Army’s birth-date of June 14. The U.S. Army was founded on June 14, 1775 when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of expert riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year.

#WIU OPS is going to recognize the birthday of each branch of service this week leading up to Veterans Day. First up is the oldest branch, the National Guard, whose birthday is recognized as December 13th. On that date in 1636 the National Guard was formed as "the first militia regiments in North America were organized in Massachusetts." The National Guard will be 382 years old on their upcoming birthday.

#WIU If it starts to look a little hairy at OPS there is no need to worry! The hairiness is all a part of the No Shave November that some OPS Officers are participating in.

#WIU Good turnout and support!
