New Athens Police Department News

PUBLIC SAFETY POST The New Athens Police Department received a report of someone possibly impersonating a police officer early Sunday morning. The case is currently under investigation so I will not release certain details. The vehicle used reportedly had red and blue lights, and may have been a light colored Dodge Charger. The suspect was reportedly a white male with a beard and was in his late 20's or early 30's. I can say that no one was threatened or injured in the case. Since we live in a rural area, I just want to remind everyone of some safety measures you can employ should you see those lights in your rear view mirror. You can drive to a police department if you are near one or you can call the police department at 475-2133 and the duty officer should answer the phone. If he is stopping you, then he will be able to communicate that to you. If you are outside of town, another option is to call 911. The operator should know if you are being stopped by a legitimate police officer through radio traffic. We take this very personal because people who do this betray and use the very trust you have in your police department to do potential harm. Thank you, Chief Leo Simburger

Kudos to Officer Terry Hamon for giving the Cub Scouts a tour of the Police Department on 3-20-18. He also gave them a lesson on the tools of the trade that we use. We appreciate the Cub Scouts and all that they stand for too. Chief Leo Simburger

As the weather begins to warm up and more people are walking around outside enjoying the weather, we would like to remind all the residents of New Athens to remember to lock their vehicles when they are unoccupied, and do not leave valuables out in plain sight in your vehicles. Our officers make every effort to patrol the entire town throughout every shift, and we have been fortunate to not have many incidents, but unfortunately, there are still people with sticky fingers that will take advantage of other people’s belongings if the opportunity is presented to them. If you see any suspicious activity, feel free to call 475-2133 and the on duty officer will respond to check it out. Thank you, and as always, be safe! -Officer Brad Penet

As many may have heard, last night, a New Athens Police Officer was on a traffic stop on State Route 13, and while he was sitting inside his patrol car, a car passing by struck the patrol car. New Athens Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene along with the assistance of the Freeburg and Marissa police departments. The police officer in the patrol car that was struck was taken to a local hospital to be examined. Thankfully, the officer was released and he was able to return back to work today. We would like to thank the citizens of New Athens for their concern about the officer and we will always appreciate the support. Illinois State Police responded to the scene and handled the accident investigation. May this serve as a reminder to everyone that if you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road, slow down, and move over if possible and if it can be done safely. This is called “Scott’s Law” and is designed to help our first responders. Thank you, and be safe!! -New Athens Police Department

Since it is income tax season, I want to again remind people that any call from the IRS is a scam always. The IRS will never call you. If you receive one of these calls, they will threaten you with jail time and/or fines in an attempt to get money from you. Pay no attention to the threats. If you like, you can tell them you know it's a scam and maybe they stop calling you. Do not give them any information or verify information if they already have it. Also, please spread this to any elderly folks in your family since those are their desired target to scam. Thank you, Chief Leo Simburger
