In full disclosure this was not our original idea or program. This is something Retired Captain James Wolf with Illinois State Police started 10 years ago in District 9. He was telling us about the program so we thought we would give it a try...
Parental Notification Program
We are starting a “trial” program in which we notify the parents of teens, under 18, that their child/children were passengers in a vehicle that had been stopped for certain offenses.
The “Parental Notification Program” will simply notify the parents that their child was in a vehicle stopped. It will not identify the driver or other passengers but will tell them a date, time, reason and location of the stop.
If we make a traffic stop for selected violations and the driver is under 18 with passengers, we will collect the name, date of birth and address of the passengers (parents name too). We will then send out a letter notifying the parents about the stop.
Selected violations could include reckless driving, distracted driving, drug or alcohol violations, speeding above a predetermined limit or violations of the GDL law.
