At this evenings Gas City Council Meeting Officer Ivan Godfrey was presented the Life Saving Award. On June 14th, 2018, Officer Ivan Godfrey was dispatched to a house fire in the 300 block of East South I Street. When he arrived, the house was engulfed in flames and full of smoke. A neighbor advised Officer Godfrey that the home owner was still inside the residence. Officer Godfrey entered the front door and made his way through the smoke-filled living room where he found the home owner, Marlene Cole sitting in a chair. He attempted to get Mrs. Cole to leave the residence but she was reluctant to leave her animals behind. Officer Godfrey physically picked her up and carried her out of the residence over his shoulder. Once Officer Godfrey knew that Mrs. Cole was safe and breathing okay he returned to the front door and attempted to enter the residence for a second time. He wanted to make sure everyone was out and hopefully retrieve some of the animals. Officer Godfrey was unable to enter the residence due to the fire and smoke, but he continued to call for the animals until the fire department arrived. Without question the actions of Officer Godfrey that night saved Mrs. Cole’s life.
