St John Police Department News

Hey everyone, we just found this out, and it works! #9PMRoutine!!!

Back to our history series. You may remember from our last installment that early in the morning on February 20, 1971 Marshal James Larimer and Indiana State Trooper John Streu were gunned down at Kolling school while checking on a suspicious vehicle. The days and months that followed would be difficult for the police department and the entire community. Before the murders Marshal Larimer was instrumental in professionalizing the department. He appointed eight deputy marshals to assist him in providing police service to St.John. The deputies and Marshal were all like family and a lot of off duty time was spent with the families together. This was never more evident than when at the funeral of Marshal Larimer, the pall bearers who carried the Marshal to his final resting place were his deputy marshals. Only one photo exists of the funeral, that we know of. One of those deputies, George Bellamy, had been serving since 1964 and was the unofficial department photographer, who documented many horrible accidents on US 41 and surrounding streets during those years. Here is also an early photo of Deputy Marshal Bellamy and his close friend, Marshal James Larimer. The star photographed hear is the very same star warn by Deputy Marshal Bellamy. Special thanks to The Bellamy family! The pallbearers pictured carrying the casket of Town Marshal James Larimer are, left front to rear, Deputy Terry Mavity, Deputy Jim Larson, Deputy Malcolm Cox and Deputy Robert Ponton. Right front to rear are Deputy John Terry, Deputy George Bellamy, Deputy Joe Struder and Gloria Larson who is behind a funeral director.
