The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department is hiring a Full-Time Confinement/Jail Officer Duties: Confinement/Jail Officer is responsible for the safety and security of inmates and detainee's including documentation of juvenile intake holdings and inmates on suicide watch. Maintains interior and exterior security of the Jail facility performs routine maintenance to Jail equipment and ensures compliance with facility rules and regulations. This position is also responsible for supervising and directing activities of Jail Trustees, performing booking procedures of individuals being detained and bonding procedures. Escorts detainees to/from locations as necessary, prepares inmates for incarceration, maintains records of court dispositions and prepares inmates for court appearances and acts as liaison between Jail and Law enforcement agencies. Shifts will vary; must be available for weekends and holidays. Candidate will be required to attend a 40-hour Jailer school. Most County offices will be closed on Monday, October 8, for Columbus Day. This includes our Adminstration Office. As always, our Deputies, Dispatchers and Confinement Officers will be working to keep our county secure.

***UPDATE*** S.R. 9 has reopened

The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department has an opening for a full-time Deputy Sheriff. The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for enforcing state and local laws and protecting County residents and their property. The applicant must be able to work any shift. As Deputy Sheriff, duties will include regular conducts of proactive and reactive patrol of County roads and other designated areas. Investigates and reports suspicious or unlawful activities and performs necessary actions to ensure proper enforcement of applicable laws. The Deputy Sheriff will monitor radio and other communication devices and respond to alarms and citizen calls of distress and complaints of alleged unlawful activity. Assesses and brings situations under control, takes statements from victims and witnesses, provides appropriate assistance, and ensures lawful apprehension and arrest of criminal offenders. Activates alarms and fire protection in an emergency situation. Among many other duties, the Deputy Sheriff will also stop drivers of vehicles for traffic violations, verify license and registration data, administer breathalyzer tests as necessary and issue warnings/citations, and /or making arrests as warranted. Respond to and investigate traffic accidents, including assessing extent of personal injuries, call for emergency medical assistance, providing emergency medical care, photographing, videotaping and measuring accident scenes, taking statements from victims and witnesses, directing removal of damaged vehicles and ensuring area is clear. The Deputy Sheriff will direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic when congestion occurs or as directed. The applicant must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, be certified or have the ability to be certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and be 21 years of age. The applicant must have the ability to qualify by obtaining a passing score in the Handgun Course of Fire and the Shotgun Course of Fire, as required by the standards of the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.
