Update on investigation of incident in the 1000 block North 7th that occurred at 3:40PM on September 5, 2018. The Atchison Police Department has located the suspect vehicle involved in this case. We have also recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting. The investigation has led to a warrant for Marcell M. Bailey, 19 years of age. He is from Leavenworth Ks. He has been charged with attempted 2nd degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Bailey is not yet in custody. If anyone has information on Bailey's whereabouts, call the 24 hour line at 913-367-4323.
The Police Department supports our area schools as the 2018 school year begins. Chief Mike Wilson provides training to teachers and staff on school violence. Corporal Josh Sinclair is the department's school resource officer assigned to the Atchison High School. New highly visible crosswalks have been painted adjacent to the Atchison Middle School. A new ordinance has been passed placing stop signs at 5th and Sante Fe, 6th and Santa Fe, and 2nd and Division. Officers have been assigned to monitor traffic safety in all school zones

At 4:00PM on Friday afternoon, July 6, 2018, an armed robbery occurred at the American Cash Advance located in the 900 block U.S. 59 Hwy in Atchison, KS. The suspect pointed a handgun at an employee, took cash, and ran west from the business. If you recognize the person in this photograph contact the Atchison Police Department through the 24 hour Communication Center at 913-367-4323 and leave your information with the dispatcher or contact detectives directly at 913-367-5525 during week days.
ATF and the Atchison Police Department have issued a $5000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for detonating and explosive device in the 100 block of North 8th Street, Atchison, Kansas. At approximately 2:30 this morning Atchison Police and Fire were dispatched on reports of an explosion in the downtown area. Upon arrival, authorities found considerable damage to numerous structures in the 100 block of North 8th Street. Investigators from the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office and United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene and began a “post-blast” investigation. Early this afternoon, investigators determined the cause of the explosion was likely an improvised explosive device placed outside the Hair Spital Barber Shop, 120 North 8th Street. The blast shattered windows and spread debris across a one block area of downtown Atchison. Investigators would like to speak to with anyone who may recognize the minivan in the attached videos and pictures. This vehicle was captured by the surveillance cameras of a business near the blast moments before the device detonated. The vehicle may be a 2004-2008 Nissan Quest. Anyone with information about this vehicle or the explosion is asked to contact the ATF at 1-888-ATF-BOMB (1-888-283-2662), contact ATF through its’ website at www.atf.gov/contact/atftips, or text 63975 using the code ATFKC. Tipsters can remain anonymous. A $5000.00 reward is available for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Officer Darren Kelley and Officer Wyatt Richardson graduated on November 3rd from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center's 14 week Police Academy. These new members of the APD have now returned to their field training officers to complete the next phase of their training before being assigned to patrol duties. The Atchison Police Department and the Atchison County Sheriff's Department ask for your cooperation in observing the posted no parking on either side of 274th Road between Rawlins Road and Phillips Road on the afternoon and evening of July 4th. This prohibited parking restriction is being established to ensure the safety of pedestrians, observers, and drivers who are attending the 4th of July fireworks event at Warnock Lake.
Sgt. Terry Kelley retires on June 19th, 2017 (1995-2017). Presented a plaque by Chief Mike Wilson. Sgt. Kelley's son, Darren, to follow in his Dad's footsteps. He becomes Officer Darren Kelley at the APD on June 26th.
