Greeley County Sheriff's Office News

We have just learned of a new scam effecting people selling items through NexTech. The buyer will contact the seller stating they wish to buy the item, then mail a check which includes extra money to pay a shipper which the buyer is to contact, confirm there is an item to be shipped, then pay the shipper. When attempting to cash or deposit the check, there is insufficient funds to cover it. Please be extra cautious when selling items online, through Buy, Sell, Trade, NexTech Classifieds, Craigslist, etc., and make sure to never give any personal information such as social security number and bank account information. Always consult with your bank before depositing checks from unknown sources. If you suspect something might be a scam, feel free to give us a call.

Finney County (Garden City) has has some counterfeit $100 and $20 bills show up at local businesses.

An old scam has recently reappeared. A popup on the computer claiming there is an issue with the computer instructing the user to call a number. The call taker then asks for personally identifying information (PII) such as credit/debit card number, social security number, bank account info, birth date, etc.. To avoid this annoying popup, update your virus protection, run scans often, utilize add-ons/extensions in your browser including popup blockers and ad blockers. And, as always, never give your personal information to ANYONE unless you know for certain who they are and that it is necessary.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Deputies, their families and the staff of the Jewell County Sheriff's Office. We're praying for a speedy recovery.
