Leavenworth Police Department News

************************Scam Alert***************************** Secret Shopper/Customer Service Evaluation. We have seen several of these in the last few weeks. Victims are receiving checks or money orders in the mail with instructions to deposit the check into their bank account. They are then asked to buy some form of prepaid card like Walmart cards, Green dot, iTunes cards etc. The instructions say this is an evaluation of the company's customer service and not to tell anyone what you are doing. Once the victim has the card they are asked to email or text the numbers on the card. When the suspects have the numbers from the card they can access the money and withdraw it. Typically the victim will be told they can keep a portion of the money, a few hundred dollars as payment for their services. It takes several days for banks to process the checks and money orders to find they are fake and there are no accounts attached. This is just another variation of other scams where checks are sent to the victim. The victim is asked to keep a portion and send the rest back. Don't fall for it! Below are pictures of scam materials sent to a potential victim who did not fall for it.
