**********************Scam Press Release************************* The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office would like to give a public service announcement about scams. There are many different kinds of scams out there but they all have one thing in common: stealing your money. Most of the scams we are currently seeing start with a phone call. Someone will call you and pretend to be a government agent or a company representative. Even if you think a phone call might be real, you should take some precautions. You might want to get more information about what this is about, including the name of the person and company calling and a number you can call back. Next, go online and find the organization’s official phone number on their website. If the scammer claims to be from your bank, visit your bank’s website. If the scammer claims to be law enforcement, visit that website or go to their office. Call the phone number on the website and explain you were contacted by someone claiming to be from the organization. There’s a good chance you’ll be told you were just called by scammers. If you have concerns about whether or not it’s a scam, please call local law enforcement. Here are more tips on what to do if you are suspicious: 1. Never give personal information 2. Call local law enforcement and ask them about your situation 3. Before deciding to give out information or money, do some research 4. Keep in mind, most companies don’t accept payment in the form of prepaid cards 5. In general, seniors are targeted, keep your loved ones updated on the latest scams The Federal Trade Commission poses the following question: “Did someone say you can only pay by wiring money, putting money on a gift card, or loading money on a cash reload card? If they did, then yes: that is a scam.”
