Neosho County Sheriff's Office News

Turn around don’t drown! It’s a catchy slogan but it may very well save your life and not put first responders at unnecessary risk. As waters continue to rise more roads may become flooded. Some of these roads have already been barricaded. It is unlawful to drive around barricades, drive on closed roads, or move barricades. In addition some insurance companies refuse to cover accidents that occur on closed roads. The below picture was from this morning after a motorist drove around the barricades on dump road east of Chanute. Please be safe!

The Neosho County Sheriff's Office will no longer be publishing a weekly deputy activity report on Facebook. The activity report will be sent to the Erie Record and the Chanute Tribune for publishing. This decision was made in response to complaints that were recieved from individuals who were targeted by an individual who made what appears to be slanderous comments. Legal research would appear that social media pages such as ours cannot censor comments even if they appear to be harrassing in nature, since this would be considered a government ran social media page. When we started this page, it was for the purpose of getting information out to the public, not for an open forum. It has had some success in identifying suspects in crimes, locating stolen property, allowing the public to know who new deputies are, and post job opportunities. We have enjoyed the positive interaction with the majority of the population that follows our page. There will always be people that are critical of law enforcement and the job we do. We understand that, but last weeks comments we feel victimized people that were in no way connected to the Sheriff's Office or directly related to any of the cases involved in the activity report. We will continue to operate the page for emergency notifications to the public, events, job opportunities and crimes where we need the public's help. If you need to report a crime or need help, our direct office number is 620-244-3888. We have a great group of deputies that are willing to assist you. Respectfully, Greg Taylor - Undersheriff
