Old Highway 40 will be closed from 183rd Street to 184th Street for repairs from 8:00 am through 4:00 pm on 09/12/2018.

On the evening of September 8th, 2018 at approximately 10:48 p.m. a Russell County Deputy observed a vehicle driving around the football field in Lucas, Kansas. The Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle which was a blue Ford Mustang bearing a Kansas temporary plate. The driver of the vehicle refused to yield and fled. The pursuit led through the city of Lucas before turning east onto K-18. The driver of the Mustang fled East on K-18 at speeds over 100 miles per hour and eventually turned South on Highway 181 in Lincoln County. The pursuit went through Sylvan Grove, Kansas and proceeded South on Highway 181 to the 209 exit at Interstate 70. Another Russell County Deputy successfully deployed Stop Sticks at this location flattening one of the vehicles tires. The driver of the Mustang turned East on I-70 and continued to flee for another few miles. The driver finally pulled over in the area of the 212 Mile Marker on I-70. The driver and passenger were both taken into custody at that location without further incident and transported to the Russell County Jail for booking. The driver was identified as 23 year old Zachary A. Packard of Salina, Kansas. Packard’s initial Russell County charges include Felony Flee and Elude, Reckless Driving, Driving while Revoked, Possession of Meth, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Packard is also being held on a Kansas Department of Corrections Parole Violation warrant. The passenger of the vehicle was identified as 20 year old Darian R. Vanmeter of Salina, Kansas. Initial charges for Vanmeter include Possession of Meth, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Marijuana. The Russell County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Lincoln and Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Offices, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Lucas Fire Department for their assistance in bringing this pursuit to an end without injury or property damage. On the afternoon of 09-06-2018 members of the Russell County Sheriff's Office responded to 200 Block of North Main, Luray Kansas and placed John A. (Jack) O'Leary under arrest on the strength of 3 outstanding warrants. During the course of this arrest information was obtained that led to a narcotics search warrant being served on O'Leary's residence of Apartment B5 in the Regal Villa Appartment Complex. Numerous items of evidence were recovered and O'Leary's prelimary Russell County Charges include Possession of Meth, Possession of Paraphernalia, and Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drugs.

We have just been informed that there will be no school at USD 407 on 08/30/2018.

We are also getting these calls at the Sheriff’s Office. According to the scammers we are about to arrest ourselves.

We have been getting lots of reports today about scam telephone calls. Most have been claiming to be from the IRS threatening to have local law enforcement coming to arrest you. These are scams. Please hang up and never give any personal information.

At approximately 1:20 on the morning of July 29th, 2018 Russell County 911 received calls reporting a swimmer that was missing at Lake Wilson. Callers reported the man attempted to swim out to a boat that had came loose and was floating away. At approximately 7:20 am searchers recovered the body of a 35 year old male who was identified as the missing swimmer. We are not releasing the name at this time pending the notification of family.

On the afternoon of July 25th, 2018 at approximately 12:45 pm Russell County Dispatch received reports of a one vehicle injury accident on Interstate 70. The accident occured near the 187.5 Mile Marker. Denise M. Carson was driving East on Interstate when she lost control of the 1998 Dodge Durango. The Durango left the roadway and entered the South Ditch where it struck a KDOT sign before crossing back into the East Bound lane where it rolled numerous times before coming to rest in the median. Carson was transported to Russell Regional Hospital by Russell County EMS where she was treated and released. Carson advised that she was in Russell working for the carnival at the Fair. Carson was placed under arrest and transported to the Russell County Jail for booking. Charges include Driving While Suspended, No Proof of Insurance, Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of Meth, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Expired Registration, and Illegal tag.

On the evening of 07-19-2018 at approximately 7:50 pm Russell County Dispatch received numerous calls regarding a grey vehicle acting suspiciously and attempting to steal fuel in the Fairport and Natoma areas. Shortly after these calls came in a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper spotted this vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed near Gorham Kansas. The vehilce refused to stop for the Trooper and the chase entered Ellis County for a period of time. The chase returned to Russell County on Interstate 70 and continued East to the Wilson exit in Ellsworth County. While in Ellsworth County a female passenger jumped from the vehicle and was taken into custody by Law Enforcement Officers. The chase continued North on Highway 232 and entered Russell County once again. Two Russell County Sheriff's Officers deployed Stop Sticks near the Lake Wilson dam and struck three tires. The driver of the vehicle continued to flee on gravel roads and was eventually taken into custody South of Waldo Kansas. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jeffery Nakai Makekau of Hawaii. Makekau was transported to the Russell County Jail for booking. Initial charges include Felony Flee and Elude, Driving Under the Influence, and Reckless Driving. The Russell County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the alert citizens who reported this vehicle and all Law Enforcement Agencies who assisted in the capture of this individual without injuries and minimal property damage.

PRESS RELEASE On June 21st, 2018 at approximately 5:28 pm Russell County Dispatch received a report of a possible gunshot wound and domestic situation at 17617 Balta Road, the residence of Ryan Paul Thompson and Dorene E.D. Thompson, located near Gorham, Kansas. Russell County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded and located Dorene Thompson and two small children at that location. It was learned that Ryan Thompson had fled the area in a black 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe bearing a Kansas temporary tag. An attempt to locate was sent out to surrounding agencies and a short time later the Hays, Kansas Police Department located the vehicle and took Ryan Thompson and Ambor Holm into custody without incident. A handgun was located inside the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that a shot had been fired inside the residence near Gorham but no injuries had occurred. Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers transported Ryan Thompson and Holm to the Russell County Jail and Dorene Thompson was placed under arrest at 17617 Balta Road and transported to the Russell County Jail. Both children were placed into Police Protective Custody and removed from the residence. Members of the Russell County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant regarding this case on the evening of June 21st, 2018 at 17617 Balta Road. Numerous items of evidence were recovered during this search. On the morning of June 22nd, 2018 the Russell County Sheriff’s Office executed a second search warrant on the 2004 Tahoe driven by Ryan Thompson and further evidence was located. This is an ongoing investigation and the Russell County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our gratitude to the following agencies for helping us resolve this situation. Thanks to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Hays Police Department, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, Russell County EMS, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. All three individuals were booked into the Russell County Jail and the initial charges are listed below. Ryan P. Thompson- Aggravated Endangerment of a Child, Aggravated Domestic Battery (firearm involved), Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Dorene E.D. Thompson- Aggravated Endangerment of a Child, Aggravated Domestic Battery (firearm involved), Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The National Weather Service in Wichita, KS has issued a * Flood Warning for the Saline River near Russell. * From late tonight until late Thursday night. * At 12:30 PM Wednesday the stage was 5.5 feet. * Flood stage is 18.0 feet. * Minor flooding is forecast. * Forecast... rise above flood stage by early Thursday morning and continue to rise to near 18.5 feet by Thursday morning. The river will fall below flood stage by Thursday afternoon. * Impact... at 18.0 feet... widespread flooding of lowlands in the vicinity of the gage occurs affecting pasture and cultivated land. The width of the river extends to approximately 400 ft. The areas where Saline River Road, Canyon Road and 180th street connect, several sections along those roads will begin to flood. It may be possible small bridge crossings in the vicinity may be underwater. Fairport Road will be underwater on the east and west entrances into Fairport.

The other picture is of the Saline at 184th Street and Land Road just now. You can see the amount of change as the water moves East through Russell County.
