This week we recognize Arson Awareness Week and the great contributions of Accelerant Detection Canines in investigating arson in Kansas. Read our press release here: http://1.usa.gov/1GKKbj1. When an arson dog is used as part of an investigation, there are fewer but more accurate evidence samples, which reduce expenditures at the lab and, ultimately, speed up investigations and provide a higher conviction rate.

May is Older Americans Month. Blaze, our fire safety dog, teamed with Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) to create this great video on keeping seniors safe from fire. Please share!

May is Older Americans Month. Today, Blaze was with Kari Bruffett, Secretary of Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, to begin shooting a Public Service Announcement on "Senior Fire Safety." Look for this great video to come out in the next few weeks!

Governor Brownback today signed the Proclamation designating May 3-9, 2015 as Arson Awareness Week in Kansas. The theme for 2015 National Arson Awareness Week is "Accelerant Detection Canines -- Sniffing Out Arson". The Governor got to meet Brewster with Topeka Fire Department and our very own Tana (who, don't forget, has been nominated for the Hero Dog of the Year award!).

Big Milestone! We now have 500 fire departments reporting to KFIRS ... we are now even better able to fight fire with facts!

OSFM is hosting a day long Fire Facility class in Manhattan today. Dr Elayne Pope, Forensic Anthropologist and Chief Medical examiner from Norfolk, Virginia is instructing on burn effects and patterns that result on human remains. There are 156 attendees from 4 states to include fire fighters, fire investigators, law enforcement, coroners, crime scene technicians, and forensic anthropologists.

Our condolences to the family of Joseph P. Odle, who served as Kansas Fire Marshal from 2003-2004. Mr. Odle passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. You'll find his obituary here: http://bit.ly/1J71RYp

Today is the first day of the first-ever NFIRS Manager Workshop. This event has been coordinated and hosted by OSFM with the assistance of MSFM. We are so happy to host 41 attendees from 14 different states and FEMA!

Participants will be better able to understand and apply the requirements of the 2012 International Building Code regarding the knowledge of performing a nonstructural plan review. When you complete this seminar, you will be able to determine whether a given set of building plans complies with the outlines requirements of the 2012 IBC.
