School is back in session! Please be mindful of your surroundings and help keep our children, and everyone else, safe! As a reminder to motorists: •School zones are in effect school days Monday through Friday from 7:00 - 9:00am and from 2:00 - 4:00pm. •Louisiana Law states that no person shall operate any wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle during the posted hours within a school zone. • School crossing guards have the authority to direct vehicles. Motorists who are approaching school zones are urged to pay attention to the school crossing guards for hand instructions. • All vehicular traffic must stop no less than 30 feet from a school bus when the bus’s stop signals are activated. A vehicle approaching a stopped school bus from the opposite direction does not have to stop when traffic is separated by a divided median, but must remain cautious of the children boarding or exiting the bus Back to School Safety Tips for Students: Riding the School Bus: •Wait five giant steps from the road and when the school bus arrives wait until the driver says to board. •When boarding the school bus, go straight to your seat and sit facing the front and do what the school bus driver tells you. •When exiting the bus, look out for cars. When you're off, take 5 giant steps from the school bus. Look left-right-left to make sure no cars are coming and wait for the driver to signal it's safe to cross. Walking to School •Walk on the sidewalk and if there is none, walk facing traffic. •Do not push or shove others when you walk. •When crossing the street, look left-right-left for cars and do not cross if a car is coming. Always use a cross walk if you can. Riding a Bicycle to School •Always wear a helmet and make sure to buckle your chin strap. •Ride on bike paths or on the sidewalk. Do not ride in the street.
