Scams take place every day and everywhere. He is an example of one here in Sabine Parish that took place in the last month. The investigation started in Meridian, Idaho when a Mrs. Harvey entered the Meridian Police Department and reported she was a victim of an apparent scam. According to the victim, she had answered a Craigslist advertisement for a rental house located in Meridian, ID and had corresponded with a man named Fidell. She further stated that Fidel told her he got tired of paying property management companies so he took out the ad himself to rent the property. The victim then filled out a rental application and sent it to Fidell along with a $1450.00 deposit. She then sent an additional $1300.00 and was advised she would be able to move into the rental property the following week. Both the money transfers were from the Walmart in Boise, Idaho to the Walmart in Many, La. The money orders were both made out to Fidell and a female that lived in Sabine Parish. When the victim attempted to move into the property, she found that Fidell had no association with the properties, and that no one there had ever heard of him. It was then that she realized that she had been scammed out of $2750.00. The Meridian, Idaho authorities gathered additional information from the victim, the property management company and Walmart. They then contacted the Many Police Department. A name and address were provided of the female that had received the money orders at the store. She was interviewed and acknowledged that she did receive the money from Boise, Idaho. She stated she had taken the money and transferred all but $20.00 to her fiancée who lived in Nigeria. She had met him through a chat room on the internet three years earlier. She had not met him face to face, but according to her, he was coming to the states in the future and they would be married. The 54-year-old female stated that she had been cashing checks for him the past three years and had no idea there was anything wrong with this. The investigation is continuing, the local female has been charged with two counts of Illegal Transmission of Monetary Funds. ________________ This is the classic rental scam: This scam takes place on the internet and the scammer doesn’t need to be present and may never have been to the property. This scam is especially dangerous because it targets both property owners and renters. One flavor of this scam involves a crook finding a photo of a property and its address then posting them on Craigslist or other online rental websites hoping someone will be willing to wire them the first and last month’s rent, security deposits, and assorted fees. If you think no one falls for this, guess again. People are generally quite trusting and the ad will be so enticing that the potential renters will think they’re getting a bargain.
