🎃 Reminder that many children will be out walking tonight as they trick or treat. Please be mindful of this and go slow especially on side streets and in neighborhoods. Several groups will be out at 6pm on Main St. coordinating efforts for a fun safe time for kids. 🎃

Last evening Sandwich Police competed in the Children's Cove 8th Annual Hot Wing Contest! Congratulations to Dennis Police for their win this year!

Officer McCracken had the pleasure of meeting a young man by the name of William while out on patrol. A great example of Community Policing that means as much to us as it does to our community members ( big and small!) Thanks to William's mother for sending in this message.

TRUNK OR TREAT has been rescheduled due to weather! Based on the poor forecast for Saturday, the decision has been made to move the Trunk or Treat event to Sunday, 10am to Noon.

Today Sandwich Police received a “Cookies for a Cop” donation. Even K9 Tuuka got some goodies! We thank Erin Manley who made the delivery today, for all her hard work as well as the many other wonderful people who make this happen for us and all of our blue family across the Cape.

Capt. John’s Whale watch for today has been cancelled due to weather. All donated tickets will be honored in the spring for any trip 5/15-6/15/19, so hold on to your tickets!

We have had extensive interest in the Whale Watch Tickets for Sunday. All tickets have been claimed.

We would like to introduce to you one of our newest members of Sandwich Police Department. Officer Craig LaRocco. Officer LaRocco is a 2008 graduate of Sandwich High School. He attended the The University of Dayton, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. After college, Officer LaRocco served four years with the 747 Military Police in the Army National Guard. Officer LaRocco attended the MPTC Plymouth Police Academy from January through July of this year. Upon graduating the academy, he completed his on the job field training within the department from July through October. Please say hello to Officer LaRocco as you see him out and about on patrol!

Capt. John's Boats of Plymouth Ma. has donated 100 tickets for this upcoming Sunday's whale watch. The boat departs from the Plymouth Wharf at noon. Tickets are only good for this date and time. Chief Wack, Sgt. Lawrence, Officer Bondarek and Officer Cabral all visited Sandwich High School classrooms over the past two weeks to talk about Criminal Law,Juvenile Law, the structure and functions of the police department and Community Services. We appreciate every opportunity to engage positively with our community youth.

We would like to welcome one of the newest members of our department, Officer Christian Harold. He is a 2014 graduate of Sandwich High School. He attended Norwich University and was in the Corps of Cadets. He is currently finishing his Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. Officer Harold attended the MPTC Plymouth Police Academy from January through July of this year. He also completed on the job field training from July through October. We are happy to have him on our department and encourage you to say hello and welcome him as you see him around town!

SPD will be again be holding its annual women’s personal safety class. Class dates are 10/29, 11/1, 11/8, and 11/15. Class is held from 5:30-9 PM each day. The class will be held at the Sand Hill School at 16 Dewey Ave. Registration is done through the Sandwich Recreation Department website and is free of charge. Instructors are Sergeant Gilrein, Officer Cabral, Officer Kent and Officer Lois Wack. Female members of SPD are RAD self-defense instructors and are excited to share their knowledge. Class space is limited and commitment to attend all four classes is needed. Sign up quick it fills up fast!

Sandwich police participated in the national Coffee with a Cop day this morning. Special thanks to Café Riverview and Dunkin’ Donuts for hosting us. Chief Wack was presented with a check from integrated marketing manager, Christine Paddock and Unit manager, Diane Ofstein Of Dunkin’ Donuts. Monies collected were from the Cape Cod Blue coffee card initiative this summer. $23,860 was collected and will be split equally between the Cape Cod Regional Enforcement Counsel and the Yarmouth Police Foundation. Thanks to all!

The Sandwich Police Department will be participating in its fourth annual National Coffee With a Cop on Wednesday, October 3rd. Officers from our Department will be at Café River View, 451 Route 6A in East Sandwich 9-10:30AM, and Dunkin Donuts in the Trade Winds Plaza, 290 Route 130, Forestdale, from 8-10. Please join us for coffee and conversation. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Sandwich Police Association will be holding its 27th annual golf tournament on Friday, October 12, 2018. Registration starts at noon, shotgun start at 1:00PM. All proceeds to benefit the Sandwich Police Association Scholarship Charity. Shark sighting reported off East Sandwich Beach. This morning at approximately 10am, the Public Safety Dispatch received a call reporting a shark sighting off of East Sandwich Beach, in the Salt Marsh Road area. The caller reported they believed the shark was attacking a seal. The Sandwich Fire Department has their patrol boat deployed and is checking the area. The fire boat will be patrolling until 1700 hours today. The US Coast Guard is also checking the area. Any shark sightings off Sandwich beaches can be reported to the Sandwich Public Safety Dispatch Center at 508-888-1212.

SGT. Gannon Canal Cruise Yesterday the proceeds from the SGT. Gannon Canal Cruise were presented to the young man SGT. Gannon mentored. $54,600 was presented for his future educational needs. Present were; (left to right) LT. Jason Keene, Regional Director of Big Brothers and Sisters of Cape cod & the Islands JR Mell, cruise coordinator Lois Wack, Rylee's mother Nicole, Rylee, CPT John's Whale Watch owner Bob Avila, and Chief Wack. TRAINING ON ASSISTING THOSE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS The Sandwich Council on Aging and the Sandwich Police Department are offering a training program to the public on ways to assist those dealing with mental health issues. The course will teach techniques to recognize symptoms of mental health problems, how to offer initial help, and how to guide a person to appropriate treatments and other supportive help. The class is not intended to replace a licensed therapist. The certification is offered in two four hour sessions from 1:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 6th and Thursday, September 13th and is limited to 20 participants. A certificate of completion will be given to those who complete both classes and pass the final exam. There is a $20.00 registration fee which covers the cost of materials.
