On Wednesday morning, July 12th, 2017 the Chilmark Police Department received several reports of solicitors going door to door claiming to represent the Massachusetts Fraternal Order of Police (MassFOP). These solicitors were reported to be operating a Honda Accord in poor condition and were not dressed in professional attire, raising concerns of their legitimacy. Several donations to the MassFOP were made, and reporting parties stated they were lead to believe by these solicitors that a portion of the proceeds from their donation would go towards the Chilmark Police Department. The Chilmark Police Department would like to clarify that they have no affiliation with the MassFOP and does not and has never received any resources, financial or otherwise, from the MassFOP. The proceeds of any local donations to the MassFOP do not go to the Chilmark Police Department. It should also be noted that a Better Business Bureau review states that the MassFOP does not meet the national classification standards of a "Charitable Organization." Members of the Chilmark Police Department are currently working to identify these solicitors. Several attempts have been made to contact The MassFOP without success.
