A question was recently raised as to whether or not the Traffic Supervisors (Crossing Guards at the Schools) have the authority to be out directing traffic. The Traffic Division looked into this further and found that the Federal MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) and the Massachusetts Division of Labor Standards both address this issue. They are not supposed to be directing traffic in the law enforcement regulatory fashion. Their purpose is to safely cross children and keep driveways clear so traffic can move in and out of the schools. The schools have been made aware of this as well as the bus company.
