Portland Police Department News

Today, we say goodbye to a long time dispatcher and friend of the Portland Police Department, James Richards. JR retired from the Portland Regional Communications Center in 2015, after 35 years of service. He was always calm in the eye of the storm. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Richards family and friends. https://www.pressherald.com/2018/11/10/feature-obituary-james-richards-62-longtime-police-dispatcher-who-kept-his-cool/?fbclid=IwAR0hHia2kNFgl9xukTzWg8u4QDxjB2eCTtFoA-CUnZn8yCOLTEQ6MJIT27M

When most of us were young, we were told about superheroes. Superman, spider-man, batman, etc, come to mind. As we grow older, we realize that not all superheroes have to possess special powers or wear flamboyant capes or outfits. We start to understand that superheroes live among us, and we see them daily. Superheroes are those who serve selflessly, and go beyond the "call of duty" or what is expected of them. They put the greater good in front of their own. They go strange places and occasionally do fly (albeit in planes or helicopters) to get to them. All so that us "regular" folk can feel safe in our country. On this Veteran's Day, we would like to thank all of you superheroes--those serving and those who have served in the past. We appreciate you today and everyday.

Thank you Daisy Troop 1060 for bringing us in some delicious treats. As you can tell, they were a hit.

Today on Voting Day, please Vote against driving on Congress Street from Stevens Ave to Westbrook St. Vote for alternate routes. Crews are on scene working diligently, however, these things take time. We will keep you posted with any updates.

Happy Halloween! To celebrate this day, Portland Police Officers will be equipped with tactical zip-lock baggies full of candy! We will be passing out candy to unsuspecting trick-or-treaters throughout the city...even those dressed as firefighters. If you're out trick or treating please make sure to say hi to the men and women keeping your neighborhood(s) safe! They may even have a treat for you.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Remember there will be a lot of people out and about tonight. Drive SLOW!! -

Every year we see several police officer Halloween costumes out "trick or treating". This year, we are reminding all aspiring officers that there is only one date (11/3) remaining to take the written entry exam for the next academy process. For the right person, we will drop a $10,000 dollar signing bonus into your bucket of candy. **side note: if you meet the qualifications for an entry level police officer and are still trick or treating, we may have some other questions for you. It was just a silly joke, we won't be giving away $10,000 at the station on Wednesday.** See our current hiring page for more info: https://portlandmaine.gov/1043/CURRENT-HIRING-INFORMATION

The dispatchers of Portland Regional Communications Center are wearing shirts this month to support those who are fighting and to remember those who have lost their fight with breast cancer. Many of us have family or friends who have been affected by breast cancer. #Pinktober #breastcancerawareness #PRCCcares

Washington Avenue is back open. Thank you to all who shared.

**Road Closure** Washington Avenue in the area of Maine Avenue will be closed down until further notice, as a result of a motor vehicle crash into a utility pole. Central Maine Power is currently on scene assessing the damage. Traffic is being diverted onto Ray Street and Allen Avenue. We will advise when the roadway is clear for traffic. Disclaimer: We do not own the Boston Red Sox, nor do we own their logo. Also, not all PPD employees like the Red Sox, however, they are the greatest team in the history of baseball, so we shall continue to post about them. Forever.

There are only a three test dates left for the January police academy class. APPLY TODAY to start the hiring process! www.portland-police.com

In just a few more days, we will be turning our clocks back. This means that commuters will be traveling in the dark. We have recently seen a large amount of bicyclist traveling to and from work with inadequate reflectors. We encourage everyone to have a rear red or amber light and a front headlamp while riding at night. Be safe and be seen.

With October being Domestic Violence Awareness month, Officers of the Portland Police Department showed their support by wearing purple ribbons on their uniforms. As you can see in the pictures below, City Hall has also done a great job in showing their support as well. #TakeActionMaine
