This Veterans Day, we would like to thank all Veterans for their selfless service and sacrifice. Including the 11 members of our department who have, and are still currently serving our great country! We will always be grateful for you! 🇺🇸

Recently, members of East Lansing Police Department's Anti-Bias Council visited three museums to learn the history of various cultures, groups, and religions. The museums included: the Holocaust Memorial Center, the Arab American National Museum, and the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia (Using Objects of Intolerance to Teach Tolerance and Promote Social Justice.) Members took the opportunity to reflect on the past, as well as current issues facing various groups today. They aim to take their experiences back to the community and address bias in a proactive manner.

Some of East Lansing's finest cops and firefighters were stumped on what to be for Halloween...turns out the firefighters wanted to be heroes, and we just wanted to kick our feet up for a little bit. #HalloweenSpirit #GearSwap #RapidResponseRecliner #ChiefCanWeGetSome

Today, we remember and honor Officer Johnson. He was shot and killed on October 25, 1984. He is the only East Lansing Police Officer to have died in the line of duty throughout our 96 year history. On this date, Officer Johnson responded to 1801 N. Hagadorn #203 to conduct follow-up on a criminal complaint he was working. The senior citizen living at this address had reported his vehicle was taken without permission by his aide. Upon entering the apartment, Officer Johnson was immediately ambushed by both Wayne Lamarr Harvey and Patricia Ware. Harvey fatally shot Jim in the head. Both suspects fled the scene on foot; they were subsequently apprehended on Birch Row near Hagadorn. Just prior to their arrest the pair attempted to steal a second vehicle, killing the owner in the process. Both Harvey and Ware were convicted on multiple charges, including First and Second Degree Homicide. Harvey is currently serving a life sentence at a MDOC facility in Jackson. At the time of his death, Officer Johnson, his wife Valerie, and their six children resided in Charlotte. He had served with the department for 13 years, 11 of those as an Officer. Prior to his time with the department Officer Johnson served in the United States Army having attained the rank of Captain. Please take a moment of your day to remember and honor his sacrifice as we should never let his death fade into the past. Today, the ELPD Honor Guard made an annual trip to Bedford, MI where Officer Johnson and Valerie are buried. They performed site maintenance and a flag ceremony to honor his memory. The flag they folded will be brought back and placed into a newly constructed custom shadow box which will soon be displayed outside the front desk. Ofc. Johnson, you will never be forgotten.

Officer Culross is not horsing around tonight. Be sure to behave so you don’t get chased down by a horse... #MakeSureToSayHay #HorseCops

HELP! We've caught on tape an individual who is working through some anger issues - and caused damage to city property in the process. (GASP!) If you know who he is, or who his friend is, PLEASE LET US KNOW. We have some detectives that would like to provide a safe place for him to discuss his feelings. Suspect may have bumps and bruises - because running is hard. ***Watch till the end, you won't be disappointed.***

Today local law enforcement agencies participated in a CommUNITY event at the Lansing Mall. We joined Eaton County Sheriffs Office, Ingham County Sheriffs Office, Potterville PD, Lansing PD, Carson City PD, and MSP at the mall. There were demonstrations, give aways, treats, and selfies. Some firefighters got to be the police, and some police got to be firefighters. #CopsAreStillBetter #CommunityUnited

⚠️⚠️ SCAM ALERT ⚠️⚠️ The #EastLansing Police Department has been made aware of a scam attempt via Facebook Messenger, where someone falsely identified as the "East Lansing Police Department" is demanding to be contacted regarding unpaid tickets. Community members are advised that this is a scam. ELPD would never reach out to an individual in this manner demanding payment of tickets.

Yesterday's ELPD Honor Guard fundraiser at Cops & Doughnuts was a success! Thank you for everyone who showed up to support us. ELPD Honor Guard members Sgt. Vedder, Sgt. Ojerio, and K9 Officer Horst worked hard to prepare and serve donuts for everyone to enjoy! The fundraiser was held the day after ELPD Honor Guard members Ofc. Morehead and Ofc. Hamilton returned from a week long honor guard school held in Alpena, Michigan. The school is put on by the Sheriff's Municipal Memorial Assistance Response Team and DFL Honor Guard Training. The training culminates into a full honors funeral put on by newly trained honor guard officers and firefighters. The funeral honors those previously lost in the line of duty - those that are never forgotten. Additional photos of the training school can be found here (photos are still being added): https://lisas.smugmug.com/SMMART-Honor-Guard-Training-Sept2018 Below includes a photo of Officers Morehead and Hamilton, along with two ELFD Honor Guard Firefighter/Paramedics Ornelas and Selden, that also attended the training.

Reminder! East Lansing PD will be hosting a fund raiser for the ELPD Honor Guard tomorrow Sept 15, 7am to 11am, at the Cops and Doughnuts - Capital Precinct in Lansing. Come enjoy some doughnuts and meet some members of our Honor Guard team! It's for a good cause!

We will never forget.

DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER! If you have been drinking, use a designated driver who has not had any drinks, use a ride sharing service, or take a taxi. We will have increased drunk driving patrols through September. Note: officers do not have to have 'drunk driving patrol' placards to pull you over for drunk driving! There will be officers out with the sole purpose of looking for impaired drivers. Consider this a warning! Drunk driving arrests can result in large costs, a criminal record, and points on, or loss of, your license. A sober ride is much cheaper. Drunk driving also kills a large number of people every year. Please do not put yourself or other people at risk. The cost is not worth it. So, as you celebrate being back at school, a night off of work or otherwise, keep in mind how you will get home safely. We want you to get home safe.

The crash scene has been cleared, and the roadway is back open!

We are currently investigating a serious crash on E Saginaw at Hitching Post. Saginaw is closed down westbound at Alton. Please avoid the area!!
