The Sheriff's Office has been getting many calls about another round of IRS scams. Be vigilant about any unexpected calls even from local telephone numbers. Caller IDs can be easily manipulated. The IRS will never call threatening to issue a warrant without immediate payment. We advise you: DO NOT return any calls to the numbers given. DO NOT talk to the caller who claims to work for the IRS even if they provide some of your personal information. The IRS will never call you requesting personal information. Please contact our office if you did give away information such as Social Security numbers and bank account information.

They do say Minnesota has two seasons: winter and road construction. Motorists should be aware of 14 miles of road resurfacing occurring on State Hwy 210 between McGregor and US Hwy 169 beginning July 30. The road will be single lane with a pilot car according to MNDoT. Drive carefully!

With the recent heavy rains and rapid rise in lake levels, the Aitkin County Board will be holding an emergency meeting on Monday, July 16, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. to consider placing a "No Wake" restriction on some of our Aitkin County Lakes. The meeting will be held in the Sheriff's Office basement.

NOTICE TO BOATERS: Please use caution this weekend as many of the county's lakes are experiencing high water levels. Docks and other fixed objects may be partially or completely submerged near shore.

The Sheriff's Office has learned of a new scam involving medical billing. You could receive an email appearing to come from a local medical provider and could perhaps even have the name of a local doctor. It will advise you to click the link to view an invoice of services rendered. Do not click this link. If you have any questions about billing contact your provider using the contact information on your paper billing or through the website of the provider. Your provider will assist you to determine if you have current pending charges. As always, anytime you are asked to pay for services using a prepaid credit card, an ITunes card, a Google Play card, or similar payment method, you are likely dealing with a scam.

We are already seeing a surge in activity for the holiday week, so from the Sheriff's Office, everyone have a fun and safe Independence Day holiday week!

The entrance to the Sheriff's Office will remain closed into Wednesday due to the ongoing demolition work.

Due to demolition of the old jail, the west entrance next to the Sheriff's Office will be closed Monday and Tuesday. If you need to come to the office please use the north entry or the alley door between the courthouse and family services.

Expect a few water covered roads in the southern areas of the county. Water from the weekend's heavy rains is making it's way downstream and exceeding the capacity of some culverts.
