Kill Devil Hills Police Department News

On 10/30/18 Officer Charlton was invited to speak with Kill Devil Hills Cub Scout Pack #116. Pack #116 was focusing on "community heroes" and as such asked Officer Charlton to talk about the different things police officers do in the community. Pack leaders stated that too often Police Officers are only viewed "behind the wheel" and they wanted the pack to see them as leaders in the community. Charlton talked about the many functions of Police Officers and how "we all work together to build a better and safer community".

We are excited to be participating in Dare County Toys for Tots this year. We will be taking donations at the Kill Devil Hills Police Department and Fire Department. We will also be at several events around town. Come out and see us!

In anticipation of the question (in light of other recent posts) we know this individual is not connected to the Burger King breaking and entering. We are looking into other possibilities... KDH POLICE ARREST B&E SUSPECT AFTER EARLY MORNING PURSUIT A 17-year-old male has been arrested for multiple vehicle break-ins including the theft from a donation box. At 4:24 a.m., a resident in the 1100 block of North Virginia Dare Trail heard the noise of car doors being opened in their driveway. The resident observed a male in a skull-faced mask entering vehicles parked in the driveway of the residence. The resident called 911 and confronted the individual who fled on a bike. A Kill Devil Hills officer responding to the 911 call spotted the suspect few minutes later; the suspect ditched his bicycle and fled on foot into the neighborhoods. Officers from Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Nags Head Police Department and Kitty Hawk Police Department converged on the area and helped establish a perimeter. Coincidentally, the suspect was again spotted running through the neighborhood by the original 911 caller. The caller helped direct police to the suspect who was then apprehended. The pursuit and search for the male suspect lasted approximately 30 minutes and covered the area between Tanya Drive and Landing Drive. The suspect admitted to attempting to enter more than two dozen cars and was successful in gaining entry to seven unlocked vehicles. Approximately $200 in cash was recovered from the suspect. Later in the morning, employees at the Kill Devil Hills Dairy Queen discovered the Children’s Miracle Network donation box at their store had been broken into. Video from the store’s security cameras revealed that the suspect in this incident was the same as the male from the vehicle breaking and entering events. Our agency would like to thank the Nags Head PD, Kitty Hawk PD and Dare County Sheriff’s Office for their quick assistance and invaluable help. We would particularly like to thank the 911 caller who played a vital role in the capture of this suspect. The suspect was placed under bond at the Dare County Detention Center. In North Carolina, persons over the age of 16 can be charged as an adult for criminal offenses; however, they are still considered a minor until the age of 18. Therefore, information about the suspect, including a photo, is not being released.

Anything you can do to help would be appreciated...

We are pleased to present our Police Lip Sync Challenge Video! The theme of the Kill Devil Hills Police Lip Sync Video Challenge is how the community we serve supports us! In ways big and small the citizens of Kill Devil Hills help us do our job every day and for that we are grateful. To that end, "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" (the Dolly Parton version) seemed like a fitting song. Special thanks to: Jon Levy and the staff of Rooster's Southern Kitchen, Carol Ann and the Jolly Roger Restaurant, Max Media of the Carolinas and Lowes of Kill Devil Hills. The group portions of Kill Devil Hills Police Department Lip Sync Video Challenge were recorded during National Night Out. We would like to thank everybody who showed up to participate.

Many thanks to everyone who came out to make National Night Out and our Lip Sync Challenge a success. The Kill Devil Hills community did itself proud once again. We'll have the final video ready in a week or so, schedules permitting.
