A Maryland mother left her 11-year-old child with a one-year-old child she was babysitting to run a quick errand. When she returned, the one-year-old was seriously injured and unresponsive. The concerned mother reached out to 911, and the young infant was rushed to the hospital. Sadly, his injuries were too severe, and he passed away on February 28th.
According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, the 11-year-old child admitted to assaulting the infant. Now, the 11-year-old is being charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in death. She’s been detained in a juvenile facility pending her first hearing. Her name will not be released due to her age.
Police are disheartened by this incident. Investigators continue to look into the situation as they try to determine what caused this tragedy. Initial reports suggest that the mother of the one-year-old had made an arrangement with the family to watch her youngster overnight. The next morning, the mother in charge of the one-year-old went to run an errand and left both kids alone at home.
It’s unclear why the 11-year-old assaulted the baby or whether she used any weapons or not. Police have been left with more questions than answers as they try to determine what motivated the child to hurt another child. It remains unclear whether or not the 11-year-old understands the gravity of the situation.
The State’s Attorney’s Office is considering pressing charges against the mother who left the children alone. According to the state’s laws, children can’t be left unattended with another child until they’ve reached 13-years-old.
