Social media is notorious for spreading video footage of interactions between the police and people being arrested. One recent encounter in Pennsylvania has already been viewed almost four million times, and it captured a Memorial Day beach arrest that didn’t go so well.
Emily Weinman, the 20-year-old being arrested in the video, can be seen sunbathing on the ground when officers begin attempting to detain her. One officer is visibly on top of the suspect while another is shown smashing his fists into the beachgoer’s head twice. The officers forcibly grab Weinman and pin her to the ground before handcuffing her.
Weinman has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice, aggravated assault by spitting on a police officer and being a minor in possession of alcohol. Media reports suggest that Weinman posted to social media over the weekend, but quickly deleted her message hours later. In the post, Weinman admitted to having unopened alcohol with her. When police attempted to ask for her information, she refused. As she tried to walk away from the encounter, she tripped into the sand. This is where the video begins. She also alleged that the police department asked her to perform a breathalyzer test and she passed.
The viral video’s action starts mid-arrest, so it’s unclear exactly what transpired before the physical confrontation. The Wildwood Police Department later released a statement explaining their intentions to launch an internal investigation into the incident. The officers who can be seen in the video have all been placed on administrative duty until the investigation is completed.
