The Associated Press reports that a couple has been arrested in Maine for fatally beating a 10-year-old girl, and several neighbors had reported abuse to authorities in the past.
Sharon and Julio Carrillo, of Stockton Springs, were both arrested and are being held on $500,000 bail after their initial court appearance on Wednesday. The couple is charged in connection with the murder of Sharon’s 10-year-old daughter in their home. Both of them admitted to police they had beaten her for several months prior to her death, and tried to stage the scene to appear to be an accident before calling 911 last Saturday. The couple tried to make it appear as if the girl had fallen into the basement.
Defense attorneys are seeking more information about the couple’s confessions and are considering psychiatric exams.
Sharon is 33 and has no criminal record. Julio, 51, had a domestic assault conviction several years ago in Kentucky.
Prior to moving to Stockton Springs, the couple lived in Bangor. Neighbors at that address heard abuse happening in the home and claim to have reported it to family services and police. No comment was offered by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. They have not confirmed or denied any involvement with the case or couple.
One former neighbor told the Portland Press Herald he saw police visit the couple’s home several times.
According to investigation records, the couple forced the girl to kneel on a tiled floor while they hit her with a belt multiple times, says CBS News.
Two other children who lived in the home with the couple are reported to be safe and in the custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.
