Mercedes Vanesa Guevara has been arrested by San Bernardino Police after eluding them since July 11. The suspect has been charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection to the tragic accident that occurred on Medical Center Drive and Highland Avenue.
The recent accident happened last Wednesday night at around 11:30 P.M. Maribel Gonzalez, a mother of nine, was waiting at the curb for the traffic light to turn red before proceeding across the roadway. When the light turned red, Gonzalez was just proceeding across the road when Guevara’s vehicle sped through the traffic light.
The car made impact with Gonzalez. The collision was so forceful that the victim was hurled nearly 150 feet down the road. Emergency medical staff promptly recognized the victim was about 9-months pregnant with a baby boy, but both the baby and mother were killed upon impact.
Rather than calling the police, the suspect fled the scene of the accident. Police reports indicate Guevara continued to drive her Dodge Charger down the street until she lost control of the car. Her car eventually came to a rest near a fence and then caught fire. Police witnesses the woman fleeing from the burning vehicle and into another unidentified car. She was able to escape that night, but she has finally been brought to justice after an extensive search that lasted five days.
Guevara is being detained at San Bernardino’s Central Detention Center. She has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, but it’s unclear whether additional charges will be brought against her. Guevara’s bail has been set at $200,000.
