FOX News reports that a person of interest in the case of a murdered New York college student may be located in Nicaragua. Police have discovered the victim’s ex-boyfriend boarded a flight to Central America just hours after she died.

Orlando E. Tercero, 22, has been identified as a person of interest in the murder of Haley Anderson, 22, who was a senior nursing student at the State University of New York. Anderson’s body was discovered after police responded to a welfare check request last week.

According to Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikiski, it is believed that Tercero boarded a flight at 8:40 a.m., just four hours before Anderson’s body was discovered in her home. Tercero reportedly has family in the country, but it is unknown by authorities whether he is a U.S. citizen. Authorities are also trying to determine if Tercero may have dual citizenship.

The unknown status of Tercero’s citizenship causes problems for authorities, as it’s possible that he may not be extradited now that he has been identified as a person of interest.

Tercero was also a former nursing student at the university with Anderson. The two were involved in a romantic relationship, but the extent of that relationship has not been disclosed to media sources.

Anderson’s cause of death has not been released. She was expected to graduate in May of this year.
