John Hubbard, a 61-year-old resident of Hawaii, has just been slapped with multiple charges after an extremely irrational and dangerous confrontation with a neighbor. The entire group of islands have been under serious stress over the past several weeks due to the eruption of Kilauea’s Volcano, and this confrontation highlights the tension that Hawaii’s citizens are facing.
Harry Kim, mayor of Hawaii, has ordered a mandatory evacuation zone around the spewing lava. Authorities estimate that over 2,000 individuals have been displaced by the natural disaster and around 75 homes have been destroyed. One of these displaced individuals was revisiting his former home which has since been destroyed by lava when the distraught suspect approached him.
The suspect ordered the victim and his friends to immediately leave the area. The victim attempted to explain to Hubbard that the area was his former home, but the suspect started firing his handgun. A 21-year-old woman accompanying the victim reported the man pointed the gun at her face and demanded that she hand over her cell phone. The suspect then took her property and threw it in some bushes. One witness was able to record the incident on a separate cell phone, and the footage has since been uploaded to social media sites.
The police were called to the scene which all occurred inside a designated disaster zone. Hubbard was arrested. He is facing charges including five counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, one count of first-degree robbery, two counts of reckless endangering, ownership of a prohibited firearm, failure to obtain a gun permit, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and the failure to register a weapon. His bail is set at $222,000.
