People.com reports that a 28-year-old mother was arrested in Louisville on January 4 for allegedly leaving her three children in the car in sub-freezing temps while she shopped at Walmart for more than 20 minutes.

Broquel King did not leave the car running and left the windows cracked, says People. A concerned witness called police to respond, and when they arrived on scene the temperature was 15 degrees Fahrenheit and wind chill was 9 degrees. Customers who witnessed the children in the car led police to the vehicle.

The three children in King’s care, a 4-year-old, 1-year-old and 6-month-old were left alone for a period of more than 20 minutes says the Lexington Herald-Leader. The doors were left unlocked and engine was cold to the touch when police arrived. Medics were summoned to check the children on the scene.

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, King returned to the car and told police she had only been gone for five minutes, even though the authorities had been with the children for 20 at that time. She was arrested and charged with criminal abuse and wanton endangerment, as well as disorderly conduct.

King has not entered a plea and does not have an attorney on record. She is being held on an undisclosed bail amount at Louisville Metro Corrections.

Arresting officers included in reports that the children were “in substantial danger of death” or serious injury from the brutal cold temps and were unable to remove themselves from the situation.
