The Washington Post reports that a man in North Carolina took his family to lunch, got up from the table, and proceeded to ram them with his vehicle, killing two of them. At the Surf and Turf Lodge in Bessemer City, just 30 miles west of Charlotte, Roger Self, 62, was eating appetizers with his family. When he got up from the table, they thought he was visiting the restroom.

Shortly after, a waiter was heading to check on the table when a white Jeep drove into the restaurant, running into the table where Self’s family was seated. Self allegedly intentionally drove the Jeep into the restaurant. Two people were killed. Self is a former police officer and private investigator.

Self was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. One of the victims was Self’s daughter, Katelyn, age 26. The other victim was Amanda Self, his daughter-in-law. Three others were injured in the crash, including Self’s 13-year-old granddaughter.

No plea has been entered, and no attorney was found on record for Self.

No potential motive has been given for the intentional crash, either.

In recent months, Self had fought mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression and mental breakdowns. According to his pastor and friend, there were days he wouldn’t leave his bed. As precautionary measures, Self had all guns removed from his home. The family believes this was not a conscious act, but rather the mental illnesses were to blame for Self’s actions.
