MySA reports that a man has been arrested for stealing a rare shark from a San Antonio aquarium and taking it out in a stroller, according to security video. The shark is a gray horn and was snatched over the weekend in the middle of the day. The man has not been identified, but he did confess to police that he stole the shark.
The man took the shark out of its tank, wrapped it in a blanket and pushed it out of the aquarium in a baby stroller on Saturday.
The 38-year-old faces theft charges of $750-$2,500. Two other people are expected to be charged according to police.
The shark, a female, was determined to be in good health after being returned to the aquarium. She is under a year old. She will remain under observation for a period to make sure she does not suffer any effects of stress and does not show signs of parasites.
Tips were called in after the news reported a truck was found that was connected to the theft. After tracing the truck to the suspect’s home, they found that he had several marine animals in an aquarium and he admitted to the theft. He had a horn shark that died recently and was trying to replace it.
It has not been determined if the man will face any federal charges yet.
