The married couple 70-year-old Gary Eugene Skelton Sr. and 66-year-old Jackie Dawn Skelton were discovered deceased in their North Carolina home on September 6th. Gary Skelton Sr. was currently serving as the mayor of Leggett, a town that is home to about five dozen residents.
Jackie Skelton never arrived at work on September 7th. Her co-workers at Vidant Oncology became increasingly concerned when they couldn’t contact her, so they requested the police to perform a well-check at her home. During the welfare check, police found the bodies.
During a press conference on September 7th, the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to the public that the politician and his wife had been shot down in their home. The authorities worked tirelessly to help solve the crime in less than eight hours. Further details into his horrific double murder are still being withheld until the entire investigation is complete. Forensic evidence is still being processed, so police are not confident in releasing any additional details.
While a motive is still unclear, the police have already arrested three suspects in connection to the murders. Dakeithia Nesha Andrews, a resident of Rocky Mount, has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Both 25-year-old Keith Earl Williams and 18-year-old Mitchell Brinson have also been taken into police custody and charged with first-degree murder. Court records reveal that Williams had only recently been released from prison on August 28th. He was serving time for a felony charges related to a shooting in Rocky Mount in 2016.
