The Charlotte Observer reports that a teen has been identified and charged with the murder of a fellow student at a North Carolina high school. A student was shot at Butler High during a fight on Monday, and died hours later. The victim was a 16-year-old sophomore at the Matthews campus.

The suspect is a 16-year-old in the ninth grade, and has been charged with first degree murder.

The victim was taken to the Carolinas Medical Center before dying later the same day. According to the Superintendent of the school system, the fatal shooting occurred after the two boys had a disagreement. The fight started just after school had started for the day.

The boys were in a hallway where several other young students witnessed the shooting, which happened at approximately 7 a.m., just before classes were to start. A school resource officer was near the fight when it happened and quickly defused the situation.

School officials are not sure how the student got the gun into the school in the first place. Although not every bag is searched upon entry to the school, they have been increasing school security in the last several months.

Officials did state that it was possible this was a bullying situation where they didn’t intervene quickly enough.
