A horrifying series of events resulted in an overwhelmed Maryland mother attempting to take her own son’s life. According to court documents, Kristina Petrie’s 11-year-old son has autism. His autism diagnosis and special needs caused the mother extreme distress.
On March 12, the 11-year-old boy came home from school and found his younger sibling crying on the couch. His mother was eerily laughing and crying at the same time. He retreated to his room to play video games, but his mother followed him upstairs. According to the affidavit, the mother questioned why her son wasn’t doing his homework before raising a saw towards him. The boy attempted to escape, but the mother caught him and pinned him down. She brought the saw’s teeth against the young boy’s neck in a reported attempt to decapitate him. Thankfully, the boy was able to escape until his father arrived home from work.
Authorities observed broken skin, scabbing and several thin lines across the boy’s neck three days later during an interview. They also found cuts and marks along the boy’s back, left shoulder and hand.
Petrie’s husband immediately brought his wife to a local hospital for evaluation. Hospital staff reported that Kristina expressed her opinion that the children “needed to die”. She reportedly feared that her autistic kids would “grow up to be a burden to society”, and she argued that her husband wasn’t doing enough to help her raise their autistic children.
The mother is currently undergoing psychological evaluations. She is schedule for a preliminary hearing on April 20th. She is being charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse and second-degree child abuse.
