Emily Petronella, a 19-year-old female, has been arrested and denied bail after firing her weapon and striking an officer who was attempting to serve a search warrant on her home.
The bullet hit the officer in the shoulder, and other officers were forced to rush him to the nearby Stroger Hospital. According to initial medical reports, Petronella’s bullet fractured a vertebra before becoming lodged into his right shoulder muscle. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Now, Petronella is facing attempted first-degree murder charges for her actions. There has been some controversy surrounding what happened that night.
According to police, officers arrived at Petronella’s home at around 7:20 P.M. on March 9th. The officers were serving a search warrant on the home for illegal weapons and narcotics. Prosecutors allege that all officers were wearing police uniforms, and they had activated their emergency lights on their vehicles before serving the warrant. Police announced themselves and knocked on the door. That’s when Petronella reportedly shot her firearm.
Police eventually seized over 10,000 grams of marijuana, $950 in cash, a spent bullet cartridge and a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic gun from the home.
Petronella’s mother and her attorney have both suggested that Petronella may have not realized that the person she shot at was an officer. Her mother told media outlets that someone had broken into her daughter’s home a year ago, which prompted her to buy the firearm. It’s possible that she thought the officers were intruders. Her attorney told news outlets that he was “confident” that the officer’s body-cam footage would exonerate Petronella.
For now, Petronella is facing numerous charges including the aggravated discharge of a weapon at a peace officer, armed violence while discharging a weapon, aggravated assault of a peace officer with a weapon, violation of bail bond and the delivery and manufacturing of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana.
