FOX News reports that Rachel Dolezal, a.k.a. Nkechi Diallo, has been arrested and charged with welfare fraud and other charges. The former Spokane NAACP President became infamous as a white woman who chose to identify as black. She pleaded not guilty to charges in Washington of first-degree theft by welfare fraud, second-degree perjury and making false verification. She was freed on her own recognizance and was given until Monday night to appear for booking and fingerprinting.

Diallo is accused of illegally receiving over $8,800 in welfare assistance between August 2015 and November 2017. She was investigated after authorities became aware she had written a book and discovered she was claiming income of less than $500 per month. Her bank statements showed nearly $84,000 deposited during those two years without reporting most of it.

The deposits came from book sales, art sales and speaking fees.

She did report a one-time job income of $20,000 in 2017 to the state agency.

Dolezal became infamous after her parents told reporters that she was white, even though she presented herself as a black activist. After resigning as the NAACP President, she also lost her position on a police oversight commission and a freelance columnist position. She was also fired from her job of teaching African studies at a nearby university.
