People.com reports that three Girl Scouts and one adult were killed by a car as they picked up litter in western Wisconsin on Saturday near a highway. A black Ford F-150 truck crossed a lane and ran into the ditch where the group was picking up trash. The truck was driven by Colton Treu, 21. He initially fled the scene but later turned himself in.
One woman and two girls died immediately on the scene, and a third girl died at the hospital. Another girl was critically injured during the accident.
Treu was arrested and is awaiting charges that will likely include four counts of homicide through the negligent use of a vehicle.
There were two groups of Girl Scouts working the area of County Road P that they had adopted. The girls were wearing safety vests at the time they were working.
The Lake Hallie Police Department and Chippewa County Jail, where Treu is being held, have not provided comment to the media at this time.
