Damon Grimes was killed during an encounter with police back in August, and police have just recently released the body cam footage revealing what happened that day. Hours of footage was obtained through a public records request from Detroit Free Press.

15-year-old Damon Grimes was riding on an ATV. He could be seen doing a wheelie before being pursued by Michigan State Police Trooper Mark Besser. While attempting to flee, Trooper Besser fired his taser at the child while he was going around 35 miles per hour. As a result, the ATV slammed into a parked truck and flipped over. Grimes was ejected from the vehicle. His collision with the pavement dislocated his skull. He was pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital.

When this incident was investigated, Besser decided to resign from his job. Shortly later, Trooper Besser was arrested for second-degree murder for improperly tasering the boy while he was operating a vehicle. He is still imprisoned with a $1 million bail. His criminal trial is scheduled for July 9th. The 9th grade student’s family has filed a wrongful death suit against the police department.

Bodycam footage reveals several officers including Trooper Besser, Officer Aubrey Wade and Officer Emily Stephenson discussing the situation while awaiting an ambulance. The officers refused to escort the ambulance to the hospital and displayed no sympathy for Grimes. Officer Wade, who has worked at the department for 22 years, was quickly reassigned after the footage of his disparaging remarks became public.
