FOX News reports that a Wisconsin couple has been arrested for allegedly keeping their children in cages. Travis Lanier Headrick, 46, and Amy Michele Headrick, 39, were arrested Friday for reckless endangerment, child neglect and false imprisonment.

The couple’s five children – four of whom are adopted and one is biological – were found to be kept in makeshift cages and a horse trough inside their home in Melvina. Amy told authorities the children’s sleeping arrangements could be equated to a “glorified crib.” She also admitted that the cages were kept shut with zip ties. Amy described the trough as a “washable membrane,” and told police she “didn’t want to put him in a bathtub and make him sleep in the bathroom,” so she thought the trough was ideal for washing out and taking out for the child, who she says almost fell out of a second-story window.

Amy also said that in one instance one child tried to choke another, so the cages were protection for them. She validated the cages by saying she didn’t want the children hurting each other at night while she was sleeping.

The ages of the children have not been disclosed.

Police were notified of the situation when a witness told them the children were being abused. They also said one child had been held under a faucet with scalding hot or freezing cold water pouring onto them. The children also allegedly ate the same bologna and cheese sandwich every day.

The couple is being held on $20,000 bond and they have a court hearing on September 6.
