We are honored to have been invited to take part in a memorial service at Congregation Shaara Tfille in Saratoga Springs on Sunday evening for the victims of last weeks shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Pictured is Undersheriff Castle lighting a memorial candle during the service. Photo by Erica Miller of the Schenectady Gazette.

In light of recent school bus stop tragedies motorists are reminded to use due caution during early morning driving hours. Children at bus stops are often waiting during low-light conditions. School bus operators when approaching bus stops activate flashing amber lights to indicate a stop is approaching. Motorists need to be prepared to stop when approaching a school bus that has amber lights flashing. After the bus stops, the operator of the bus activates red flashing lights and a stop sign on the road side of the school bus. When the operator feels the environment is safe, they will motion for children to cross the road, either to or from the bus. When all flashing red lights are turned off it is then and only then safe to proceed. As we reflect on the horrible events in the attached media clips, including but not limited to, Indiana and Pennsylvania, we are reminded that no community is immune from disaster. All we can do is work together to provide the highest level of safety, in and for, the residents of Saratoga County. Drive safe.

The Sheriff’s Office was honored to participate in the Dan Provost Memorial Walk for Awareness and Recovery at Skidmore College this morning. Dan Provost lived his entire life in Saratoga Springs in 2014 at age 23 as a result of a drug overdose. He had struggled for several years with substance use disorder. The goals of the Memorial Walk were to remember lives taken too soon, to raise awareness of addiction, to educate the community about recovery services, and to celebrate those living in recovery. Participants braved inclement weather for the 1.5 walk on the Skidmore campus and attendance at the event was exceptional. Our thanks to Ken and Maureen Provost for their tireless advocacy and efforts to ensure other families never experience the horror they had to. They are truly heroes and we were honored to walk in their son’s memory.
