SFPD Officers receive award after saving lives of longtime lawyer, teacher’s aide in separate incidents On Sunday, August 26, 2018, at 11: 30 pm the Seneca County 911 Center received a 911 call from Gloria Serling reporting that her 87-year-old husband collapsed on the bathroom floor. Sergeant Gentile and Officer Camacho responded to the scene. In less than three minutes they arrived to find Bert Serling lifeless on the floor. There was no detectable pulse and ineffective breathing. Sergeant Gentile and Officer Camacho attached the departments AED and began CPR. Shortly after, firefighters from the Seneca Falls Fire Department arrived. Firefighter Christopher White joined the efforts to save Mr. Serling. After several rounds of effective CPR, Mr. Serling regained a detectable pulse. Rescuers continued to deliver oxygen and assisted with breathing until he became conscious. Mr. Serling remained conscious, breathing, and alert for the balance of the call for service. Mr. Serling was treated and released from the hospital. It is my determination that Sergeant Gentile; Officer Camacho and Firefighter Christopher White played a vital role in saving the life of Mr. Burt Serling. This is Officer Camacho’s first Lifesaving Award since graduating the Police Academy this year and starting on the road in July of 2018. This is Sergeant Gentile’s 4th lifesaving award since starting at the Seneca Falls Police Department in 2013. Two prior Narcan saves and one prior CPR related save. On September 10th, 2018 at approx. 10:53am, Sgt Sue Hawker, Officer Martin Rotz and Officer Jacob DeChick were dispatched to the Frank Knight Elementary School for the report of an unconscious female with ineffective breathing. Upon arrival, Teacher Aide Cheryl Malloy was found unresponsive, with agonal breathing and no pulse in a classroom. Sergeant Hawker, Officer Rotz and Officer DeChick quickly determined that Ms. Malloy was suffering from cardiac arrest and took over CPR from School Nurse Vicky Burm. Officers applied the department AED, and Ms. Malloy was given two shocks by Officer DeChick while CPR continued. North Seneca Ambulance personnel arrived on scene and took over care of Ms. Malloy. Ms. Malloy remained unresponsive and was transported by North Seneca Ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital where she underwent cardiac surgery. Ms. Malloy went back to work at Frank Knight on October 1st, 2018. It is my determination that Sergeant Hawker; Officer Rotz; Officer DeChick and Nurse Vicky Burm played a vital role in saving the life of Ms. Cheryl Malloy. This is Officer DeChick’s first Lifesaving Award since graduating the Police Academy this year and starting on the road in July of 2018. This is Sergeant Hawker’s 4th lifesaving award since starting at the Seneca Falls Police Department in 1994. One prior Narcan save and three prior CPR related saves. This is Officer Rotz 2nd lifesaving award since starting at the Seneca Falls Police Department in 2014. One prior CPR related lifesaving award
