Tahlequah Police Department News

Congratulations to Officers Bryan Qualls and Michael Gray for their Buckledown Awards today. They were honored for their proactive occupant protection efforts.

Thank you to the Tahlequah City Council and Mayor Jason Nichols along with Superintendent Lisa Presley and Tahlequah Public Schools. Three SRO’s were added to the police department tonight which will put an officer at each school site. Congratulations to Robbie Bacon, Kyle Reed and Jacob Robertson on becoming Tahlequah’s newest officers! These additions will help tremendously in protecting our kiddos and school staff. We are blessed with tremendous SRO’s already in our schools and these positions will only strengthen the program.

Sgt. Jason Girdner defied the social norm in regard to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He made DUI arrests yesterday and today on day shift before 9:00 A.M. The arrest today was made near the Middle School at a little after 8. Good work Jason.

Congratulations to our newest Sergeant, Dexter Scott and our newest Patrolman, Matt Frits. Good luck gentlemen.

Bike school started today. On Friday TPD will officially have bike patrol.

Officer Josh Girdner and Burro made an arrest and located a small amount of drugs during their overnight shift. Josh stopped a vehicle and executed a municipal arrest warrant on Gabriella Myers. Burro conducted an open air search of the vehicle and alerted on the driver's door. Marijuana was located in the vehicle and Donald Horney-Coates indicated the marijuana was his. He was issued a citation.

Lt. Cory Keele made an arrest last night, after a short pursuit, of Faye Burris. Cory attempted to stop the vehicle after observing it cross the center line and force another vehicle off the roadway. Burris did not stop for Keele and during the pursuit she slammed on her breaks several times trying to cause Cory to hit her. Burris later struck a mailbox before ultimately getting her vehicle stuck. She exited her vehicle and was yelling at officers. A passenger also exited the vehicle who turned out to be the adolescent son of Faye Burris. Burris was arrested for DUI, Transporting and Open Container of Alcohol, Child Endangerment, and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident.

Night shift recovered two stolen vehicles last night and made three arrests associated with the possession of the vehicles. Officer Dexter Scott, who has developed quite a knack for finding stolen cars, recovered one and Lt. Brandon Vick recovered the other. Great work men and thanks to CHerokee County Sheriff's Office and the Cherokee Nation Marshal's Service for their assistance.

"Routine" Traffic Stop Officer Thomas Donnell thought he was stopping someone for speeding, but ended up with several infractions. After stopping Miranda Caviness for driving 50 in a 35 Donnell soon learned she had no license, no insurance and the license plate had been altered, but it didn't end there. While inventorying the vehicle for impound a bag containing drugs and paraphernalia was discovered. Good work Thomas! This is exactly why we work traffic.

Ivo was at it again. After responding to Family Dollar on a shoplifter who had fled. Ivo was used to track the suspect, Travis Teague, to Sequoyah Park where he was taken into custody. Teague was arrested for Petit Larceny, Public Intoxication, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Obstruction. Great work Ivo and Officer Bryan Qualls.

There has been rumor that the door to door Kirby Vacuum salespeople was a scam. We have made contact with the persons in question, identified them and verified their business.

Officer Bryan Qualls and K-9 partner Ivo were certified this evening through CLEET on Narcotics detection. Congratulations to you both and a special thanks to Cyndi Jewett for making it possible to purchase Ivo.
