North Atherton Street project alert: On Monday, November 5, the work zone speed limit will be reduced from 35 MPH to 25 MPH from Aaron Drive to the State College Borough line near Mitchell Avenue. This speed reduction will be in place until project completion in October of 2019. Once the project is finished, the speed limit will return to 35 MPH in this area. The reduction in speed was determined after a speed study was conducted. This reduction is expected to increase safety for motorists, pedestrians, and workers throughout the construction zone. The speed limit from Mitchell Avenue to Park Avenue within State College Borough is already permanently posted at 25 MPH. http://www.twp.ferguson.pa.us/index.cfm?fuseaction=content.pageDetails&id=81992&typeID=40311

If you’re thankful you’ve never been stopped and arrested for a DUI, you may not want to experience what that’s like even in simulation. But on Monday night, Centre County residents participating in the Citizens Police Academy got the opportunity to wear a pair of drunk driving goggles. “Arrested” by Patton Township Police Officer Brian Shaffer, they tried but failed to follow his instructions to walk a straight line and balance on one foot. Shaffer and his co-instructor, Ferguson Township Police Sergeant Ryan Hendrick, said DUI arrests by the Centre County Drug and Alcohol Task Force have decreased significantly because people who are drinking are using Uber and Lyft ride services to get home, especially on football weekends. This video produced by the State College Area School District shows actual footage of local school bus violations. SCASD Superintendent of Schools Bob O'Donnell says, "Every day, the most important aspect of our work is to make sure that every student is safe. Nowhere is that more important than when our buses are picking up and dropping off students. Last year alone, we had nearly 100 motorists pass school buses while the lights were flashing and students were boarding or departing buses. The fact is, motorists must stop when the lights are flashing." The district is working with all three police departments, including Ferguson Township, to track down violators of this important law. Our thanks to SCASD for sharing this powerful message -- a critical reminder to all of us to keep our children safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pP3459pSZU&feature=youtu.be

The State College Area School District and local police are teaming to stop a dangerous and illegal act: driving past school buses when students are boarding or disembarking. During Operation Safe Stop on October 24, officers from the Ferguson Township, Patton Township and State College police departments will monitor bus stops across the district for drivers violating Pennsylvania’s Meeting or Overtaking a School Bus Law. The effort will be part of National School Bus Safety Week, October 22-26. http://www.twp.ferguson.pa.us//index.cfm?fuseaction=content.pageDetails&id=83502&typeID=40326&newsCode=233AAEF5-E3EB-B47C-3B50D442A9870A22

Domestic violence is defined as physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse. These abusive behaviors can take many forms, including name calling and humiliating remarks or jokes, isolation, and constant monitoring. Abusers use these tactics to wield power and control over their victims. When unchecked, domestic violence usually increases in frequency and severity. During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Ferguson Township Police encourage residents to learn what domestic violence is and who the victims and perpetrators are.
