DHEC has notified Greenwood County of a positive West Nile Virus case southwest of the City of Greenwood. We are spraying for mosquitoes as a precaution. Greenwood County has been diligently preparing for the effects of Hurricane Florence. As part of that preparation, the county has been drawing down the lake level in anticipation of increased water flow into the lake from the storm. As of 2pm Friday, September 14th, we have decreased the water level in the lake by approximately 8 inches. We will continue to work toward drawing the lake down an additional 4 inches before the arrival of the storm. This will put the lake at approximately 12 inches below the normal lake level for this time of year. Currently, we believe the lower lake level will provide enough capacity to absorb the effects of the storm without having to open the spillway. Of course we are constantly evaluating data as it becomes available and will adjust plans if it becomes necessary.

Tourism Related Funds Available for Non-profit Organizations Each year accommodations taxes collected from Greenwood County’s hotels and motels are returned to the County for the purpose of promoting tourism, cultural events, and other related projects. The Greenwood County Accommodations Tax commission has responsibility for soliciting requests from non-profit organizations, and making recommendations to County Council as to how the funds available should be prioritized. This year’s program is now underway, and the Accommodations Tax Commissioners are encouraging and inviting any qualifying organizations to review the application process to see if their particular projects might qualify for consideration. Requests must meet one or more of the following criteria: · Arts and Cultural Events · Civic or Cultural Events · Tourism Related Transportation Services Required application forms are available at the Greenwood County Treasurer’s Office and are available on the Greenwood County website https://www.greenwoodcounty-sc.gov. You may also email jlatham@greenwoodsc.gov to request an application. Although applications may be submitted at any time, those desiring consideration for funding in 2018-2019 must submit a completed form no later than Friday, September 21, 2018.
