These events attract a lot of fraudulent contractors to an area.

JOB OPENING COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER (CSO) CITY OF DEADWOOD The Deadwood Police Department has an opening for the position of full-time COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER. Duties include but are not limited to: parking enforcement, meter maintenance, animal control, enforcement of city ordinances and participation in various safety programs. Successful applicant must be over 21 years of age, possess or be able to obtain a valid South Dakota driver’s license and will be required to pass a thorough background investigation and pre-employment drug testing. Starting wage will be $17.31 per hour. Benefits include health insurance, dental, South Dakota retirement and vacation plus personal days. Successful applicant must be in compliance with the City of Deadwood’s residency policy within one year of hire. Closing date for applications is 5 p.m. on July 10 , 2018. The Deadwood Police Department has received several complaints concerning phone scams. In one of the complaints the caller claimed to be with the Deadwood Police Department. The caller said the victim had a warrant that needed to get it taken care of. The number displayed on the victims caller ID was the actual number for the Deadwood Police Department. The Deadwood Police Department will not contact anyone by phone regarding wants or warrants. We will also not ask for any payments for fines by telephone.

The Lead-Deadwood school district has cancelled school for tomorrow 4/13/18, due to the predicted severity of tomorrow's storm.

Press Release: On April 11, 2018 at approximately 6:15pm, investigators from the Deadwood Police Department and Lawrence County Sheriff's Office responded to a remote area located southwest of the Lodge at Deadwood. A subject hunting for shed deer antlers in the area reported that he had discovered a body. Following a subsequent investigation, authorities were able to determine that the body was of Christopher Oien. Oien was first reported missing on January 16, 2018 and had been the focus of intensive search efforts in the Black hills area. Due to the steep, rugged terrain, members of the Lawrence County Search and Rescue and the Deadwood Volunteer Fire Department were called in to assist in recovery of the body. An autopsy is pending....

The Deadwood Police Department has received complaints of unknown individuals contacting residents and businesses in the area posing as Black Hills Energy. The unknown individuals are stating that their Black Hills Energy accounts are overdue an immediate payment is needed. They are then requesting payments be made with the use of prepaid money cards purchased at local grocery stores and convenience stores. The most recent phone number used is 818-813-6632. This number does not belong to Black Hills Energy. If you should receive one of these requests contact your local law enforcement agency to report it. Black Hills Energy does not request payments to be made in this manner

The Deadwood Police Department is seeking help identifying the individual pictured. Along with the picture of the individual is the truck he was driving. This subject was involved in an intentional damage to property on 01/17/18 at approximately 1738 hours. Anyone having information is asked to contact the Deadwood Police Department at 605-578-2623 and ask for Lieutenant Mertens.
